Out of the Shadows: Assessment and Free Session

Out of the Shadows: Assessment and Free Session

I wanted to share a reflection on the completion of our recent “Out of the Shadows” Men’s Transformation Workshop—and what its success means going forward.

Over the past weeks, a group of men committed themselves to something that is, frankly, rare: sustained, honest engagement with their inner lives. Together, we explored shadow work, unconscious patterns, emotional responsibility, and the difficult—but necessary—process of confronting the parts of ourselves we would rather avoid.

Participants described the work as deeply challenging, but also genuinely transformative. For many, it opened up a new way of understanding themselves—not as fixed identities, but as processes shaped by history, habit, and unconscious drives. The integration of Jungian concepts proved especially powerful, giving language and structure to experiences that are often hard to articulate.

Just as importantly, there was a strong sense of connection. The group format, the buddy system, and the shared willingness to be vulnerable created a space where real conversations could happen—often for the first time.

At the same time, this first full run of the workshop has given me invaluable feedback about how to make the experience even stronger.

A few key insights from participants:

  • Guided reflection works best. Many participants found deeper engagement when questions were worked through collectively, with facilitation and discussion.

  • Consistency builds confidence. Introducing structured prompts may help everyone feel more ready to contribute.

  • Connection thrives with support. The buddy system was widely appreciated, with potential to strengthen accountability through scheduled check-ins.

  • Learning by doing. There’s strong interest in incorporating more interactive elements—particularly role-play.

What stood out most to me, however, was the willingness of participants to stay with discomfort. To not turn away. To keep going.

That’s where real change happens.

This workshop was never about quick fixes or surface-level self-improvement. It’s about developing the capacity to face oneself honestly—and to act differently as a result.

If you’ve been curious about this work, there’s an opportunity to begin:

In past newsletters, I’ve discussed the concept of the shadow. The shadow is that part of us we have decided is unacceptable. So, we deny...
